It’s hard to know where to start with this super cool guy, so I guess I’ll start on the floor… Yep, the floor! Basically it’s where I found myself after I fell off my chair in sheer excitement when I heard ‘Living Without Your Love’ for the first time. “Who the fuck is Walter Jones“, I said to myself. After emailing the track to Vari (my partner in blog crime), I set out on one of my typical music research missions and found out all sorts of interesting stuff about one of DFA’s newest and brightest stars Walter Jones. So do yourself a favor and take the time to read the amazing mini interview below, download the absolutely stunning track Walter so generously allowed us to blog, ‘Fading Memories’ and be sure to check out his myspace.

Who is Walter Jones?
According to Google, Walter Jones is an American Football Player, A Congressman, and a Power Ranger. OK, maybe I’m not any of those, but I am just an extremely shy music geek that is still looking for his identity, but accepts who he is. I have never been obsessed about it, but if you know who Walter is, please let me know.

How did this whole music thing start?
Well I hate to give you a cliché answer, but the best way I can explain it, it is in my blood. I come from a very musically talented family. My Grandfather played music at the Louisiana Hayride with acts like Elvis when he started out. I took piano lessons when I was a boy, but didn’t stick with it too long. I was in band in High School and played tenor sax, but haven’t played in a very long time.

What inspires you?
I know I might not make a difference in this world on a large scale like Gandhi or MLK, but I can try. If my legacy be that I inspire someone else or make someones day with my song, than that is OK with me and I have done my job.

How long have you been djing / producing for?

I had a horrible punk band that didn’t make it past the garage door back in the mid-eighties. In college, I bought some used gear like a Moog Rogue and a Prophet 2000 sampler and would jam with my friend Lester, Who had a drum machine and a tape recorder. As the 90′s rolled around, I started taking my music more seriously, learned more about pro audio, and here I am. DJing was about the same process. I have been collecting rock and disco records since I could remember, but 12″ record collecting would come about in 1982 when someone played a copy of “Body Mecanic” by Quadrent Six in the record store one day. After that, I really caught the bug. I started making “pause button” tapes in my bad room in 1984 with a cheap console stereo. It had a pause button that would stop on cue and pick up on the down beat of another song. I would make so many of these edited mixes and sell them at school. Then came the two turntables later in 1990/91. And DJed in Dallas around different underground parties. Ultimately I, and three other guys moved into a warehouse of our own and just went wild throwing parties that people in Texas still talk about to this day 15 years later. Then I moved to New Orleans and Djed a little bit, but had to figure out some life stuff, but got heavy into production. The internet happened, and now I am here.

What are you working on currently?

Actually I just finished art school and I learned videography. I am trying to incorporate visuals into my art. I have learned my way around the camera and all of the editing software like Final Cut Pro and Adobe CS4. But now that I gained moderate success with the DFA release, I am racking myself trying to top it. It is so hard because I didn’t expect the buzz around the record, so I have no formula because I cannot pick out what the appeal of it is. Also I am too critical of my music. I have probably thrown away the next Sgt. Pepper. I doubt it…GOD!!! I hope not!

What do you love to play the most?

I go through phases. I have very eclectic tastes in music, but if I had to pick, Disco. Actually anything derived from Disco, like Electro, House, or even some Detroit Techno. It just has the beat I can groove to and actual melodies to boot. I love discovering new sounds, as long as the mass media doesn’t put their stink on it too much and make it trendy.

What do you listen to when you want to relax?
Nothing. Sometimes I like to listen to absolute silence sometimes. I know my eardrums have taken a beating over the years with loud concerts, headphones cranked up, clubs, city noise, etc. Sometimes quiet is the best. But soul soothing music? My favorites are, Nick Drake, Eno, Rachmaninoff, Sade, you know.

Who are you hereo’s?
Musically? Todd Rundgren. Life? Anyone who isn’t here to destroy life, but improve it.

Who would you kill to see play?

If I had a time machine, I would try to catch Mozart, Elvis in 1956, and day three of Woodstock. There are a lot of modern day acts I would love to see, but not kill for.

Do you sing in the shower?

Sure I do. I think you can get away with it when nobody is around, and you get some great acoustics in there.

Do you watch TV?

I wish I was one of those “Kill Your TV” types. I watch too much.

Favorite food?

The kind I shouldn’t eat.

Favorite place?

I’ve been to a few places that I love for different reasons, but there are many places I haven’t been to that I’m sure I would love. I guess if I had to pick, I would choose Amsterdam. Not for the obvious reasons, just that I loved the beautiful organic vibe there.

Favorite website?

I’m a YouTube junkie. There are several more, but I have taken up too much space here already.

Man, how exciting is this shit!!! Not only did I get to hear the genius himself The Revenge (AKA Graeme Clark) play a relentlessly uncompromising wonderfully deep and funky as fuck set last month, but our new friend was totally happy to jump on board The Number 20 and answer some of our admittedly girlie questions… ;-) And all of this right in time for the release of the third installment in the ‘Instruments Of Rapture’ series, which brings OOFT & The Revenge together for some summer versions. Now as you can imagine choosing which track to blog from the killer new trilogy of pitched down house workouts wasn’t easy. However after listening to them all about 20 times I finally decided on ‘Hotz 4 U’. I know you’re gonna love it.

So as usual download the teaser, read the interview, support the music forever and ever and thank us later!

We’re soooo lucky! Shari & Vari xx

Who is The Revenge?
The Revenge is me. I think?

How many aliases do you have?
Both feet and hands are required for that calculation.

How did this whole music thing start?

“Borrowing” my dad’s 4-track while he was out at work and doing some jams with a couple of old drum machines before he got back.

What inspires you?
In all honesty, inspiration comes from everywhere for me. It could be a film, a book, a situation…

Favorite club to play in?

The Sub Club, Glasgow. Saturday nights there have no equal.

Weirdest gig you’ve ever done?

They are all weird in their own beautiful way. Although there was one last year at Rockness in Scotland where this guy just stood and pointed at us for an hour. Obviously his mum hadn’t told him it was rude to point.

What do you love to play the most?

I have no preference really – whatever fits the mood of the night.
It might be disco or techno. I like so many styles of music that genre is irrelevant if the crowd are with me.

What do you listen to when you want to relax?
Anything by John Martyn – god rest his soul.

Who are you hereo’s?
No heroes – but in musical terms I have a lot of respect for anybody who does their own thing without ego.

Who would you kill to see play?

I’m a big fan of Steely Dan – but murder is probably a step to far to see them play.

Do you sing in the shower?

No – I wouldn’t put the shower through that torture.

Do you watch TV?

Not really – I tend to fall asleep when I watch TV.

Favorite food?

A white pudding supper perhaps – it’s an East of Scotland traditional meal. If you haven’t tried it, I probably wouldn’t. I love a good curry or Thai or almost anything that’s put in front of me. Although the guys from Sorry Grandma in Melbourne took me out for snails before the gig – and I had to politely decline as I don’t generally DJ after snails.

Favorite country?

Scotland. It’s a beautiful place. Most of the time. Don’t expect sun.

So here’s the thing… We know that anyone that knows anything knows that Shari & Vari are huge Todd Terje fans! Aaaand our fanism (new word) goes further than just sweaty dance floors. And yep, there’s been a shitload, from back home in Hamburg to our other home Oslo and yep even down under Australia. However, we also fully support and love all Todd’s production work too. In short, Todd is right up there here at The Number 20. BIG TIME!

But hey if you don’t believe us download his 2008 edit of
Arbeid Adelt‘ Death Disco‘ and hear for yourself. It’s good. Very fucking good!

MALK ! Very talented and super interesting guys who drove us fucking crazy with their remix of COMA’S ‘Choices’. Definitely one of our faves this year. Shari was lucky enough to get a hold of David and pick his brain… Whoo hoo! Check it out, download the track and support MALK & COMA forever!

Who is MALK?

is a project founded by me (David Hasert) and Teen.Age.Angst

from Cologne/Germany in Winter 2006. We got to know each other in
a small town called Inzestica because we always raped the same sheep.
(OK this is not true but this was our press text for two years and we think
some people believed our story). ;-)

How long have you been djing for?
I have been Djing for nearly ten years. Today I’m playing minimal,
techno sounds with some pop influences. Teen.Age.Angst never really
djed, sometimes he is playing garage & punk records in bars. He also likes
German Schlager and Classic Rock very much.

What do you love to play the most?

I’m a singer and a producer. I don’t play any instrument very well.

Teenage.Angst is the musician in this band. He loves all kinds of instruments,
especially those that makes distorted noises. Sometimes he plays psychedelic
guitars like he’s doing in ‘Treasons’ or distorted synth baselines like he’s doing
in ‘dancing beat’. He likes quarrel, he wasn’t a normal kid!

Main inspirations of music?
I like Daf, Antitainment, James Holden, Grauzone, Casiotone for the painfully
alone, Dead Boys, Notorious BIG, Tangerine Dream, and Bauhaus.

What do you listen to when you want to relax?
My favorite tracks right now for chilling and relaxing are:
Woolfy vs Projections – Absynth (Permanent Vacation)
Mittekill – Liebling Liebling (Modul 8)
The Pet Conspiracy – Depot (unsigned)
Coma – The Strange (Firm/Kompakt)
Christian Löffler – Heights (KI records)

Favorite club to play in?
Bogen 2 / Cologne
Berghain / Berlin

Weirdest gig you have ever done?

On the Berlinale in Berlin. It was one of our first gigs and we were totally silly
and I didn’t know what to do so I screamed into the microphone the whole time.
Right next to me was a guy he was trying to scream louder than me.
“You’re totally shit”. Great fun!

Do you sing in the shower?

Of course, every misfits song is great performed under the shower.

Favorite food?

Eat less – drink more!

Favorite country?

The Blue Planet

Pretty baby grew into a lady
The people don't know what your mama know
They don't
Pretty baby

In the light of the dawn
A pretty babe was born
Her mother she had sworn to take good care of her
Every night mom would pray
Her life would not be torn
Her clothes would not be worn
Until they dropped off of her
My child, you dear, don't have no fear
I'll shed the tears, keep your head clear
My Pretty Baby

Pretty baby grew into a lady
The people don't know what your mama know
They don't
Pretty baby

Little girl I want you to attend the finest schools
And never be a fool
I've got experience
Learn all that you can
You'll find that in the end
You'll learn how to depend on yourself
It makes me glad you have the things I didn't have
Never be sad, my Pretty Baby
