LA DISCOTHEQUE | ELSEWHERE | GOLD COAST

It’s been exactly one year since HEKO graced Australian shores, and after the success of his last appearance we’re VERY excited about this years gig! If you’ve not witnessed a HEKO set, you’re in for a treat. HEKO is one of those Dj’s that absolutely exhausts you, he’ll keep you begging for more, you’ll sweat and there’s a very good chance by the end of it you wont feel your feet!

Supported by Lucas Dowling & Audun, two seriously talented music heads and in our opinion Gold Coasts finest… We 100% couldn’t imagine two better men for the job!

WHAT’S ON OSLO

Roberto Rodriguez (Manolo) is coming to town! He is promoting his debut album with a European tour and will grace us with a DJ set at Fisk & Vilt this coming Friday (11/5). What can we say about this guy..? Well he is from Finland, he started producing deep house in the 90s..He has numerous productions under his belt, his experience and great taste in music clearly shines through in his productions. We have been following his musical trail for a good while now and with great pleasure. After listening to his new album ‘Dawn’ we became even more hooked. This is album is full of good musical energy from start to end. Starts you slowly and works you up to a point where you can not sit still. Its eclectic with a fusion of old and new school house, acid, techno, catchy vocals and emotional  melody. All in all, Its Fresh!

What are you doing right now?
At the moment I’m doing the promo for my debut album ‘Dawn’. Doing interviews, guest mixes and lots of gigs. In the meantime I’m working on a few remixes which will come out during the summer. After I’ve finished those, I’m planning to get to work on some new originals.

Who are your musical heroes?
Thats actually not a very easy question. I have so many heroes. From Stevie Wonder to Fela Kuti. From Derrick May and Lil Louis to the Underground Resistance guys.

Whats on repeat at the moment?
One of the coolest tracks at the moment is the new Toby Tobias – Paradise Lost on Throne Of Blood. Another great one is the new Wil Maddams release on one of my favorite labels Local Talk. The new Sebastien Tellier album is also something that i listen to quite a lot these days.

Will this be your first visit to Oslo?
Yes this will be my first ever visit to Norway. Its actually quite strange that I’ve never been there considering that we are neighbors and all. Always wanted to go and now i finally have a chance to come there.

WHAT’S ON OSLO

We’ve had a nice little chat with two fellow music heads Tod Louie & Solaris… The boys have just started a very cool club concept in Oslo called Echo. They have both been organising parties for a while and are both very experienced DJs, and their new weekly concept has quickly proven itself to be very good quality! They have mixed it up nicely with local and international bookings, Shari & Vari loves their enthusiasm for music and their friendly approach to the scene. Vari is playing alongside these guys tomorrow night (27/4) at Bollywood Dancing! So now you know where to to spend your Friday nights…

What are you doing right now?

Tod Louie: Actually I’m in taking a break from looking up some new tracks. The Word Championship of Snooker is running on Eurosport, which is not to miss. Once you first start following it it’s really addictive in combination to the Norwegian commentator Torstein “TrickWik” WIk. You should check it out! Besides that I’m picking out some new tracks for the weekend at Bollywood. I’m really looking forward to play with Vari again.

Solaris: Living in Oslo and working for a marketing company. I also have my studio here, and most of my friends, and Dj gigs. As far as it goes! At the moment, I’m working on our (with Tod Louie) weekly concept ECHO at Bollywood Dancing, which is turning out pretty nice. We have some amazing bookings lined up for the coming Fridays, including Deniz Kurtel live In May. We are also doing “Det Gode Selskab” (In Good Company) on some selected Sundays as well as on some selected Mondays. These events will take place at secret locations, and at Fisk & Vilt.

Who are your musical heroes?

Tod Louie: Hard question.. My father is a pianist and built a big stage in his backyard throwing everything from swing festivals to techno parties. Got to admire that. But beside from that my musical influences varies from funk, disco, Chicago house to more deep, classic house. If I should pick one artist that is my musical hero I got to say Nina Simone. And my all time favorite is her track, Sinnerman! There’s so much good music out there, and my sets got a little bit from many genres. A bit eclectic, if you know what I mean?

Solaris:
I would say there are 100 of them, but to scale it down I will pick out a few special ones. Music wise – Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, LTJ Bukem, Fleetwood Mac, Nightmares On Wax, Otis Redding and Lucien N Luciano. – DJ wise : Steve Bug, Zip and Four Tet.

Whats on repeat at the moment?

Tod Louie:  I’ve found an old track from Joubert Singers called Stand On The Word. I think it has been remixed by Larry Levan as well. But this new remix from Hot Coins is a real smasher! Really funky, and its bass lines will definitely make an impression on the dance floor! Its quite slow, 105BPM. But if you can keep the BPM around 105-110 for a while, and then suddenly drop that song!.. That’s whats great being a Dj.

Solaris: There are defiantly a few tracks on repeat, but there are two tracks that stands out for me in my Dj sets, and that is ; Portable – One Way feat. Efdemin and DJ Slip – Available Light (Franco Cinelli Remix). Besides this I’m always listening to Van Morrison. You should all check out one of the most essential albums of all times – Astral Weeks from 1968. Stunning! See you at ECHO 27.04.2012 with  Solaris, Tod Louie and wonder guest Vari

KINTSHO ‘THE BONGO MAN’ BENEFIT

Kintsho Ka Tshabalala (also known as ‘The Bongo Man’) was born in South Africa a long time ago. He’s an Actor, Dancer, Choreographer, Musician, Producer, Fashion Designer and Teacher. His career boasts an impressive and exhaustive list of credits. As an actor in the early 60′s he appeared in the film classic ‘Zulu’ with Michael Caine. As a musician in South Africa at a very early age he led a very successful chart-topping Penny-whistle band. As a dancer he performed (more than once) at The Royal Command Performances for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth (as part of a South African Dance Ensemble). As a percussionist (what he’s best known for) he toured the world many times over, playing alongside Africa’s first lady of song Miriam Makeba and later the legendary South African trumpeter and band-leader Hugh Masekela.

Eventually Kintsho moved to London and joined African Big Band Osibisa. He also worked at legendary Jazz Club Ronnie Scott’s where he got to meet and play alongside Jazz giant Dizzy Gillespie.  His love of music and dance eventually led him to the streets of Harlem, where he established himself as a much in demand session musician, working and touring with such music legends as George Benson, Donny Hathaway and Ralph McDonald (at New York’s historic Radio City Music Hall). In the 70’s he was also a member of the very successful Disco group A Taste of Honey. Going from strength to strength he later got involved with the world famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, working with superstar choreographer Debbie Allen (Fame).

After spending some time working and teaching in New Zealand, Kintsho finally settled in Australia in the late 80’s.  He worked extensively, splitting his time between studio sessions and live work with bands like Cat, Relax with Max and Scott Carne’s Human Soup. He eventually settled on the Gold Coast in the late 90’s, where he became resident percussionist at Queensland’s infamous Berlin Bar. In the 4 years he spent there, Kintsho (along with musical partner Don Nadi) managed to achieve almost legendary status, working alongside some of the biggest names in dance music, including: Bob Sinclar, Derrick Carter, Dimitri from Paris, Masters at Work (Little Louie Vega & Kenny Dope Gonzalez), Lee Burridge, Dj Pierre. Mateo & Matos, Miguel Miggs, Sandy River and many more…

*** It is now time for us to ‘GIVE BACK’ and support our friend in need… All proceeds from this concert go to help pay for the much needed ‘special’ cancer treatment our dear friend Kintsho needs. ***

SPIRIT SOUL MIX ARCHIVE

The Spirit Soul Mix Archive is a place where you can find mix-tapes from a variety of DJs who play spirited, soulful, and forward-thinking nu-disco/house/deep/funk/new wave. We here at the 20 are regular visitors and we can highly recommend it! We’ve been lucky enough to pin Mr SSMA aka Dustin down and ask him some questions about his not so little brain child! ;-)

So if you don’t know about this wonderful archive; which has an abundance of killer handpicked mixes (trust us), then today is your lucky day!

MINI INTERVIEW

What are you doing right now?

Checking my email and favorite pages on internet… The usual sort of routine.

How did Spirit Soul Mix Archive start?

From the beginning it started as a webpage many years ago, it then turned into a blog on word press and after another a couple of years I moved over to facebook, were we are today.

Are you a DJ/Producer/Booker/Event organizer or just a massive music lover? Tell us more about your involvement in music…

Well I must admit that I’m a giant music lover! Music has always been a big part of my life and in the old days when internet was not as big as it is today I spent a lot of money on CD’s & vinyl. I suppose we lose the importance of music when it’s divided into zeros and ones. Nowadays I buy way to many mp3′s but since it’s my biggest passion I don’t care how much I spend.

What are you doing when you’re not spreading the word about great new mixtapes?

It actually takes a lot of time (hours per day) but besides from that I have my daytime job, hang out with friends or watch some good TV shows or a movie.

How would you describe the music scene where you are?

The scene in Stockholm is not that big I’m afraid. The clubs that play house & nu-disco stuff are few… The best clubs are active only during the summer so there’s not that much happening during the winter… To name a few – F12, Slakthuset, 2:35 and OH!

What’s on repeat this week?

A new project my friend Chris Jylkke is working on with Satin Jackets, it’s still work in progress but it’s really good! I’m getting sent updates on the project now and then which is cool. Plus I’ve been listening a lot to the M A N I K: Spring | The 2012 WMC Edition too!

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

Music! It sure sounds boring but it’s the truth. I listen to music at least 3-4 hours per day and some days even more. But it doesn’t really bother me cause I really love what I do.

How far do you plan on taking the SSMA? Future goals and aspirations?

For now it’s gonna stay as it is, I have no plans of going back to a website cause it’s so easy to communicate through facebook and same goes with SoundCloud. Why change a winning concept? The site has grown way bigger than I ever thought so there is no need to change anything… I might start posting more articles about music and parties around the globe to help people find good clubs in regional areas.

Favorite website?

SoundCloud for sure, it’s the website I spend most of my time. It’s a perfect way to find new artists and producers that I would never have found elsewhere. It was only weeks ago they celebrated over 10 million users and that’s kinda remarkable for a place that has only been around for such a short time. The timing was perfect when Myspace was in a stage of dying.

DJ HELE FITTA

We hereby introduce you to the multi talented mister Martin Bjørnersen aka DJ Hele Fitta. This means The whole cunt! Yep, that’s right with a name like this you have to be something special and we dare to say that he is. He has great taste in music and also extensive knowledge of this wonderful field. He is like a walking music encyclopedia. We dig the Whole Cunt and his guest mix. Its fresh and very clean.

Who is Hele Fitta?
I’m a DJ, music writer and sometimes TV blogger(?!), but mostly just a fan of good music. I play records around town – mostly gangsta rap and gay disco. Preferably both genres, at the same time, but sometimes separately as well. I also make music, sometimes with my potna Salvador Sanchez as Punani SS (check it!).

Any comments on your mix?
It’s basically me just playing whatever record I could find within arms reach one early spring afternoon at home, trying to keep myself busy on my first day of my first attempt of giving up cigarettes after 20 years, so that’s also my excuse if the mix is a little … shaky. OK, the intro was “rehearsed” one time but other than that it’s just a spontaneous celebration of unexpected sunshine and too much coffee. No gangsta rap on this mix unfortunately (jungle Brothers DEFINITELY does not count) but apart from that it’s pretty much as all over the place as anything I do: a pop tune that I love, some italo, some underground disco, some Norwegian stuff (one “nugget” and one big choooon), some incredibly incredible house tunes and some nineties freestyle to round it out. It’s spring, my belle!

Jungle Brother – Beyond this world (Acapella)
Human League – Fascination (Extended)
Alberto Carrara- Disco King
Roni Griffith – Voodoo Man
Kat Mandu – I Wanna Dance

Prince – Let’s Work (Dark Dancer Remix)
Olav Brekke Mathiesen – Vi Drar
Todd Terje – Inspector Norse
Lidell Townshell & M.T.F.- Get with You (Riot Remix)
