WHAT’S ON OSLO

Roberto Rodriguez (Manolo) is coming to town! He is promoting his debut album with a European tour and will grace us with a DJ set at Fisk & Vilt this coming Friday (11/5). What can we say about this guy..? Well he is from Finland, he started producing deep house in the 90s..He has numerous productions under his belt, his experience and great taste in music clearly shines through in his productions. We have been following his musical trail for a good while now and with great pleasure. After listening to his new album ‘Dawn’ we became even more hooked. This is album is full of good musical energy from start to end. Starts you slowly and works you up to a point where you can not sit still. Its eclectic with a fusion of old and new school house, acid, techno, catchy vocals and emotional  melody. All in all, Its Fresh!

What are you doing right now?
At the moment I’m doing the promo for my debut album ‘Dawn’. Doing interviews, guest mixes and lots of gigs. In the meantime I’m working on a few remixes which will come out during the summer. After I’ve finished those, I’m planning to get to work on some new originals.

Who are your musical heroes?
Thats actually not a very easy question. I have so many heroes. From Stevie Wonder to Fela Kuti. From Derrick May and Lil Louis to the Underground Resistance guys.

Whats on repeat at the moment?
One of the coolest tracks at the moment is the new Toby Tobias – Paradise Lost on Throne Of Blood. Another great one is the new Wil Maddams release on one of my favorite labels Local Talk. The new Sebastien Tellier album is also something that i listen to quite a lot these days.

Will this be your first visit to Oslo?
Yes this will be my first ever visit to Norway. Its actually quite strange that I’ve never been there considering that we are neighbors and all. Always wanted to go and now i finally have a chance to come there.

WHAT’S ON OSLO

We’ve had a nice little chat with two fellow music heads Tod Louie & Solaris… The boys have just started a very cool club concept in Oslo called Echo. They have both been organising parties for a while and are both very experienced DJs, and their new weekly concept has quickly proven itself to be very good quality! They have mixed it up nicely with local and international bookings, Shari & Vari loves their enthusiasm for music and their friendly approach to the scene. Vari is playing alongside these guys tomorrow night (27/4) at Bollywood Dancing! So now you know where to to spend your Friday nights…

What are you doing right now?

Tod Louie: Actually I’m in taking a break from looking up some new tracks. The Word Championship of Snooker is running on Eurosport, which is not to miss. Once you first start following it it’s really addictive in combination to the Norwegian commentator Torstein “TrickWik” WIk. You should check it out! Besides that I’m picking out some new tracks for the weekend at Bollywood. I’m really looking forward to play with Vari again.

Solaris: Living in Oslo and working for a marketing company. I also have my studio here, and most of my friends, and Dj gigs. As far as it goes! At the moment, I’m working on our (with Tod Louie) weekly concept ECHO at Bollywood Dancing, which is turning out pretty nice. We have some amazing bookings lined up for the coming Fridays, including Deniz Kurtel live In May. We are also doing “Det Gode Selskab” (In Good Company) on some selected Sundays as well as on some selected Mondays. These events will take place at secret locations, and at Fisk & Vilt.

Who are your musical heroes?

Tod Louie: Hard question.. My father is a pianist and built a big stage in his backyard throwing everything from swing festivals to techno parties. Got to admire that. But beside from that my musical influences varies from funk, disco, Chicago house to more deep, classic house. If I should pick one artist that is my musical hero I got to say Nina Simone. And my all time favorite is her track, Sinnerman! There’s so much good music out there, and my sets got a little bit from many genres. A bit eclectic, if you know what I mean?

Solaris:
I would say there are 100 of them, but to scale it down I will pick out a few special ones. Music wise – Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, LTJ Bukem, Fleetwood Mac, Nightmares On Wax, Otis Redding and Lucien N Luciano. – DJ wise : Steve Bug, Zip and Four Tet.

Whats on repeat at the moment?

Tod Louie:  I’ve found an old track from Joubert Singers called Stand On The Word. I think it has been remixed by Larry Levan as well. But this new remix from Hot Coins is a real smasher! Really funky, and its bass lines will definitely make an impression on the dance floor! Its quite slow, 105BPM. But if you can keep the BPM around 105-110 for a while, and then suddenly drop that song!.. That’s whats great being a Dj.

Solaris: There are defiantly a few tracks on repeat, but there are two tracks that stands out for me in my Dj sets, and that is ; Portable – One Way feat. Efdemin and DJ Slip – Available Light (Franco Cinelli Remix). Besides this I’m always listening to Van Morrison. You should all check out one of the most essential albums of all times – Astral Weeks from 1968. Stunning! See you at ECHO 27.04.2012 with  Solaris, Tod Louie and wonder guest Vari

WHAT’S ON OSLO

Lots of good shit happening in Oslo these days. This coming Friday (10/2), Fisk & Vilt will be hosting the very first Oslo edition of the super cool Disco Deviant Party. Pablo Contraband is the founder of the party and the blog and will be headlining this exciting night. We have had a small chat with Pablo, so that you can get to know him a little better… Also be sure to check out his tunes and head down to Fisk & Vilt this Friday, expect nothing less than quality sounds from Pablo with good support from hWah.
++ Grab his brand new edit here.

What are you doing right now?

I’m multi-tasking, trying to reach Jon Dasilva on Skype, sending Zoo Look their fee for next weekend online, listening to the Midnight Riot LP out soon on ISM and trying to get the motivation to draft and issue the paperwork for Rayko’s US tour. All in a days work at The Unity Agency.

Whats on repeat at the moment?

Jon Dasilvarecently sent us a new mix which is outstanding so that’s been on a lot, a guy called Second Guesser in Paris his new mix is tight, Shackles edit by Drop Out Orchestra, Blondes – Water (Bicep remix) and Chamboche has some excellent new stuff, Anodyne and Mello (BLM remix) all on a lot and I play them both everywhere right now too. Just got a Maetrik vinyl through so that’s due on shortly, bit tough for the daytime though I think.

Who are your musical heroes?

My musical heroes are varied, I would say Andrew Weatherall is the big one for me as a DJ and I respect his maverick approach to music, fashion and life in general. I also loved The Cure and Robert Smith was a teen idol for me. Both very influential in my taste in music. In more recent times Greg Wilson has been a massive influence and a great help in establishing Disco Deviant and inspiring lots of DJ’s and clubbers to give disco, soul and electrofunk a try as well as bringing the edit style of production into this millennium for a lot more of us to pick up upon.

Will this be your first visit to Oslo?

First time to Oslo for me, so I’m excited. Really looking forward to seeing it briefly and of course meeting hWah and playing on Friday night. It’s his birthday you know… I have a lot of music to go through and decide upon and maybe a couple of edits to put together especially if I get the time to finish them.

WHAT’S ON OSLO

This is the first post in a series we have decided to call What’s On and these posts will serve a dual purpose. One: Helping promote club nights and artists that come to town to gig. Saturday 04/02 – Introducing: Tboy! This talented up and coming producer is arriving in Oslo and will be playing at Bollywood Dancing. Antonio Colantuoni aka Tboy is Italian born but now living in London pursuing his music career as a producer and DJ. His time in the studio has lead him to consistent growth, both as a solo artist with releases on Hourglass Records and Neim Records, and collaboration work with WildKats. So if this is a sound you like, we recommend that you head on down to Bollywood this Saturday. In the meantime check out Tboys releases on Beatport.
